Troublehouse Covert

A proper beech wood tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside near Stroud, Troublehouse Covert is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and the canopy closes in overhead - it's dark even on bright days, which sounds gloomy but actually feels rather peaceful.

You won't find manicured paths or visitor facilities here. This is working woodland, the kind locals pop into for a quiet walk rather than a destination in itself. The beech trees are magnificent, especially in autumn when the light turns bronze through the branches. Spring brings bluebells, though you'll need to time it right - mid-April is usually peak.

Walkers get the most from it. The woodland is accessible enough for a straightforward ramble, though it's muddy after rain and the paths aren't formally maintained. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here before heading back towards Stroud for coffee. It's free to enter and there's no official visitor infrastructure to speak of, which keeps the crowds minimal.

Families with young children will find it a bit underwhelming - there's nothing to discover, no play elements, just trees. But if you're staying at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park five miles away and want a gentle woodland break without driving miles, it's worth the short trip. Combine it with other Wiltshire walking routes rather than treating it as a standalone day out.
