Trent Galleries

The Trent Galleries sit just outside Beverley, a proper art space that won't demand half your day but absolutely deserves an hour of your time. It's a working gallery with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art - the kind of place where you might stumble in expecting watercolours and find yourself genuinely moved by something you weren't expecting to see.

Free entry is a genuine bonus. You're looking at serious work by local and regional artists, sometimes installations, sometimes traditional pieces. The space itself is intimate without feeling cramped, and staff tend to be knowledgeable without being pushy. It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Butt Farm is barely a mile and a half away, making it an easy trip on a drizzly afternoon when the kids are restless.

Don't come expecting major names or blockbuster shows. This is a gallery for people who actually care about art, not Instagram backdrops. That said, if you're staying in the area for a proper holiday and want to break up days at High Farm or Cherry Burton, you could easily combine Trent Galleries with a wander round Beverley's town centre - the Minster is extraordinary and takes a good couple of hours if you're interested in medieval architecture.

Best visited mid-week when it's quieter. Allow 60-90 minutes depending on what's on. The galleries matter most to art enthusiasts and anyone looking for something a bit different from the usual caravan park itinerary.
