Treherbert Park

The Afan Valley cuts deep into South Wales, and Treherbert Park sits right at the heart of it - a proper nature reserve that feels a world away from Port Talbot's industrial past. You're walking through woodland that's slowly reclaiming what was once mining country, with streams cutting through beech and oak, and if you're lucky enough to visit when the rhododendrons are out, the whole place glows pink and purple.

It's a walker's destination, frankly. The trails wind through the valley floor and climb up the hillsides, ranging from gentle riverside strolls to proper lung-burning ascents. You'll spot red kites if you're patient, and the bird life is genuinely impressive for somewhere this close to civilization. Two hours minimum if you're doing anything beyond a quick circuit - three or four if you want to explore properly.

Families with reasonably fit kids will get on well here. The easier paths are manageable with buggies near the entrance, though it's not a destination for toddlers who need constant entertainment. History buffs might appreciate the remnants of the old mining heritage visible along some routes, though this isn't a museum.

If you're staying at Willow Springs Campsite just four miles away, Treherbert makes an excellent morning or afternoon out. It's free to access and genuinely wild in parts - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Go midweek if possible; weekends bring the casual visitors, and this reserve deserves better than that.
