Traps Coppice

A proper woodland walk rather than a themed attraction, Traps Coppice is the sort of place you stumble upon when exploring the Shropshire countryside around Much Wenlock. It's a working coppice woodland - so you'll find densely packed trees, the occasional clearing, and paths that feel genuinely local rather than manicured. The forest floor changes seasonally. Spring brings bluebells and primroses; autumn turns everything gold and copper. There's no visitor centre or car park with signs - you just turn up and walk it.

This suits walkers far more than families with small children. The paths can be muddy and uneven, and there's not much here to hold a five-year-old's attention for long. History buffs might appreciate the coppicing itself - it's an ancient woodland management technique still practised here - but you'll want some knowledge to really engage with it. Budget 45 minutes to an hour if you're doing a moderate loop.

If you're camping nearby at Sytche Caravan & Camping Park or Irongorge, Traps Coppice makes a solid morning walk before lunch. It's quiet on weekdays. Go in spring or autumn when the light's better and the undergrowth less oppressive. Winter can feel a bit bleak, and midsummer crowds the path with vegetation.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the short drive from Much Wenlock if you're already in the area and fancy proper woodland rather than a managed country park.
