Traprain Law

The walk up Traprain Law rewards you with one of East Lothian's best views, though it's not a gentle stroll. This volcanic plug rises 221 metres from the surrounding farmland near Dunbar, and once you're on the path there's no pretending it's anything but a proper climb. The summit itself is fairly bare - windswept, grassy, with Iron Age fort remains if you know what you're looking for - but the views across the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh and down the coastline make it worth the leg work. Allow a good hour to get up and down without rushing, longer if you want to actually look around at the top. It's free to visit, and there's parking at the base. Walkers with reasonable fitness will enjoy this more than casual strollers; young children might find the steep sections a bit much, though determined families do tackle it. The best time is clear weather - fog rolls in often enough to completely wreck the views, and the wind at the summit can be fierce. If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, just five and a half miles away, Traprain Law makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. It won't take all day, so you'll have time for other bits of the area - the coastline around Dunbar has decent walks too, and the town itself is worth a mooch around.
