Tramshed Theatre

The converted Victorian tram depot in Woolwich has become one of London's most interesting small theatres. Walking in, you're immediately struck by the soaring brick arches and industrial bones of the building - they've kept the character intact rather than trying to hide it. The main auditorium seats around 400, and there's a smaller studio space upstairs for more experimental work.

It's genuinely worth a trip if you're after theatre that takes risks. The programming mixes classic revivals with new writing, and they do a lot of work with emerging artists. I've seen better productions elsewhere, but rarely in a space with this much personality. The bar's decent too - proper craft beers and the staff know what they're doing.

The audience skews younger and artsier than your average London theatre, which means less of the expensive-dinner crowd and more actual theatre lovers. You'll need to check what's on before you go - there's no point arriving without a show you want to see. Tickets vary wildly depending on what's running, so nothing fixed to quote.

If you're staying at Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping just down the road, this is an easy evening out. Woolwich has improved massively in recent years, and the Tramshed punches well above its weight in terms of programming. Allow two hours from arrival to curtain, and plan to eat somewhere local first - there are decent spots nearby.
