The moment you round the corner from the National Gallery and see Nelson's Column rising above the pigeons and crowds, you understand why Trafalgar Square has been London's ceremonial heart for nearly two centuries. It's not subtle - a vast paved plaza dominated by that 169-foot granite column topped with a statue of the naval hero, flanked by four bronze lions that feel like they're about to pounce.

What you actually do here is walk around, gawp upwards, and soak in the electricity of central London. The fountains are pleasant enough, the surrounding buildings - the National Gallery, the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields - provide proper grandeur. New Year's Eve brings half a million people here; on quieter days it's just tourists, pigeons fighting over chips, and the occasional political rally.

It's not somewhere to linger for hours unless you're genuinely interested in the naval history or planning to visit the gallery. For families, it's a good landmark to navigate by and a convenient meeting point. History enthusiasts might spend time studying the column's inscriptions and the square's role in British pageantry. Photographers get decent shots at dusk when the floodlighting kicks in.

Free to wander, and you can spend as little as ten minutes or as long as you like.
