Town Park Plantation

The woodland at Town Park, just outside Bideford, is one of those places that catches you off guard. You're expecting a manicured patch of green on the town's edge, but instead you get proper forest - tall conifers mixed with older broadleafs, paths that fork in different directions, and enough shade to keep things cool even on a warm Devon afternoon.

It's ideal for a couple of hours' pottering about rather than a full day's hiking. The paths are straightforward enough that kids won't get frustrated, though don't expect playground equipment or facilities - this is woodland in its working state, quiet and underdeveloped in the best possible way. Dog walkers seem to know the spot well, which tells you something about how dog-friendly the terrain is.

The real value here is proximity. If you're staying at Broad Park Camping or Owl Valley Glamping - both within walking distance - you've got easy access to tree cover without heading into Dartmoor proper. It breaks up a holiday nicely: mornings in Bideford's town centre, afternoons in the woods. There's no admission charge as far as I can tell, and no facilities, so come prepared with water and decent shoes.

Won't change your life, but it's a solid addition to a North Devon break. Especially worthwhile if you've got restless kids who need a run around or if you're after somewhere quiet to clear your head.
