It's unmissable for history types, but families should know this: it's steep in places, crowded most days, and younger children can get restless. Allow three hours minimum, half a day if you're thorough. The Tower of London is right in the City, so it pairs naturally with a walk along the Thames or a visit to nearby museums. If you're staying at Lovat Parks a few miles out, you can do this as a day trip into London proper - it's central enough that public transport makes it straightforward.

The views from the ramparts across the river are genuinely good, especially late afternoon light. Skip the overpriced cafés inside; grab lunch in one of the proper pubs just outside the gates instead. Admission isn't free, but given what you're seeing - actual working royal residence, not a museum replica - the cost is fair. Go early or book ahead to avoid the absolute crush.
