Tower Gardens

You'll find Tower Gardens tucked away just outside York, a proper slice of riverside calm that catches most people off guard. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, so forget pristine flowerbeds - this is about wetland habitats, open water, and the birds that come with them.

The main draw is the walking. There are decent trails winding through the reserve where you've got a genuine chance of spotting waterfowl, dragonflies in summer, and on a quiet morning, deer moving through the scrub. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching; the reserve punches above its weight for species. It's the sort of place where kids either love hunting for wildlife or get restless within twenty minutes, so gauge your children accordingly.

Allow a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing. The paths are manageable for most ages, though muddy patches appear after rain - wellies are a good shout in winter. There's a real sense of having escaped the city centre, even though you're minutes from York itself.
