Towards Tomorrow

The Ulster University gallery sits just outside Bushmills, and it's worth stopping by if you're touring the Causeway Coast. Towards Tomorrow is a contemporary art space that punches above its weight - we're talking proper exhibitions that rotate regularly, not the tired touring shows you'd expect in a village setting.

The space itself is clean and modern, housed within the university campus. You'll typically find installations and works from emerging artists, alongside bigger names. The quality varies depending on what's on, but that's the point of a proper gallery - it takes risks. We found ourselves spending a good 90 minutes there on a wet afternoon, which tells you something about how engaging the current show was.

It's free to get in, which removes any barrier to poking your head around. Allow an hour minimum if you're genuinely interested, though 20 minutes works if you're just stretching your legs between the Bushmills Distillery and a coastal walk. The staff know their stuff too - worth asking what's coming up next if you're in the area again.

Families with older kids will get something out of it, though it's not designed to entertain the under-tens for long. Serious art types will appreciate the curatorial approach. If you're staying at Causeway Country Pods, it's close enough to include without major detour - maybe combine it with a Bushmills visit or a walk towards the Giant's Causeway.
