Torrington Methodist Church

The Methodist Chapel on Torrington's high street is a solid Victorian structure that tells you plenty about what mattered to this Devon market town in the 1800s. Religion wasn't a Sunday afterthought here - this was proper community infrastructure, built when Methodism was gaining real traction across rural England.

Inside, you get the classic layout: a gallery running round three sides, decent acoustics (they still hold services), and that particular smell of old wood and hymn books that somehow smells the same everywhere Methodists gather. The craftsmanship is there if you look - good joinery, decent plasterwork - but it's not a showstopper. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes if you pop in, 30 if you're genuinely interested in Victorian chapel architecture.

Worth the visit? Only if you're already in Torrington exploring the town itself. It works well as part of a broader wander round this small market town rather than as a destination in itself. The High Street has enough going on - decent pubs, a proper butcher, local shops - that you can make a morning of it. Bideford's just down the road if you need bigger facilities.
