Torrington Commons

The Commons stretch out across rolling Devon countryside just outside Bideford, and they're properly worth a wander if you've got an afternoon free. It's open moorland and woodland rolled together - the kind of place where you can actually breathe, no barriers, no ticketing booths. Just you and the landscape.

What you get is straightforward: footpaths crisscrossing through heathland and patches of birch and oak, views that open up without warning, and genuinely quiet space. The terrain's manageable for most fitness levels, though some of the paths get boggy in winter. You'll spot birds if you're lucky, and the light does something special in the late afternoon across the moorland.

Family groups will get a solid two to three hours here without much fuss - kids can burn energy on the paths, there's enough variety to stop it feeling samey. Serious walkers might link it with other routes in the area. History buffs won't find much to chew on, but if you want a proper Devon countryside reset without the National Trust gift shop experience, this delivers.

It's the sort of spot that makes sense as a breathing space between the glamping at Owl Valley or Broad Park and the seafront at Bideford. Not a destination by itself, but essential if you're staying locally and want to feel like you've actually stepped off the park. Best visited outside school holidays when it's genuinely quiet.
