Torness Nuclear Power Station Visitor Centre

The visitor centre at Torness sits on the East Lothian coast near Dunbar, and it's one of those places that divides opinion completely. Some find it genuinely fascinating - there's a real appeal in understanding how the UK generates power, and the exhibition halls lay out the science without dumbing it down. You'll learn how nuclear energy actually works, see scale models of the reactor, and get a sense of the sheer engineering involved.

That said, it's not for everyone. If you're after dramatic coastal scenery, the power station itself isn't particularly photogenic - two concrete domes against a grey sky. The visitor experience depends heavily on how curious you are about the subject matter. Families with older kids interested in physics or engineering will find it genuinely worthwhile. Younger children might lose interest after forty minutes or so.

I'd allow two to three hours if you're going to engage properly with the exhibits, but you can whip through it in ninety minutes if you're just dipping in. It's free entry, which is fair enough. The real value comes if you're already in the area - say, staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the coast - and you fancy a rainy afternoon activity. Dunbar itself has plenty else going on, so don't plan your whole day around it. Go in with low expectations and the actual content often surprises visitors. Just don't expect it to be a highlight of your Scottish trip.
