Tooley's Historic Boatyard

There's something rather special about watching a narrowboat being built the way it was done a century ago. Tooley's Historic Boatyard, just outside Oxford, is where you'll find craftspeople still using traditional methods to construct and restore these wooden vessels - and you can actually see them at work.

The yard itself feels frozen in time. You walk around timber frames, watch joiners shaping wood, and observe the kind of skilled handiwork that's largely vanished elsewhere. It's educational without being preachy. Kids tend to find the scale of the boats impressive, and anyone with an interest in engineering or heritage crafts will spend a good couple of hours here easily. This isn't a polished museum experience - it's a working boatyard, so the experience depends partly on what's happening when you visit.

I'd recommend ringing ahead to check opening times and whether there's an admission charge, as details can shift seasonally. Allow at least ninety minutes to an hour and a half, longer if you want to chat with the craftspeople.

If you're staying at Fir Tree Campsite or Newton Grove - both excellent spots just five miles away - this makes a cracking half-day trip that breaks up the usual park routine. The boatyard feels genuinely local rather than touristy, which is refreshing. Pair it with a walk along the nearby waterways and you've got a proper day out.
