Tonge Gorse

The gorse takes over here in late spring - bright yellow flowers covering the hillside in waves, and the whole place smells like honey and coconut if you catch it right. Tonge Gorse is a working forest just outside Derby, proper useful if you want to get out without driving an hour to the Peak District. It's the sort of place locals have known about for years while everyone else walks past on their way to somewhere else.

The woodland trails wind through mixed forest and open heath, with views across Derbyshire that justify the muddy boots. You'll see why it matters to the area - there's active management here, fallen trees left for wildlife, and clearings where light reaches the ground. It's not dramatic, but it's honest. Walk for anything from 30 minutes to two hours depending on your mood and the state of your knees.

Families with primary school kids will get decent mileage out of it, though there's not much in the way of play facilities or visitor infrastructure. What you're after here is air and movement and the chance to let someone run about without the formality of a country estate. Walkers will appreciate the quiet - you won't fight crowds.

Free to access, no car park fees that I could find, just turn up. The best light is late afternoon in spring and early summer. It slots nicely alongside stays at Field of Dreams Glamping or Broadleaves Glamping if you're based locally and want your exercise without leaving the area.
