Walking into Ton Wood feels like stepping back in time. This ancient forest sprawls across Powys near Hereford, the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a forester from three centuries ago. Paths wind through, though they're not manicured or signed like some country estates. You need your wits about you, really.

It's best suited to walkers who enjoy navigating by map and instinct rather than arrows. If you're after a leisurely stroll with the kids, you might find it a bit much - the paths can be muddy and unmarked. History enthusiasts will appreciate the sense of continuity here; these woods have probably looked much like this for generations. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about exploring.

The real draw is the quietness. You won't find crowds or facilities - no café, no visitor centre, just trees and birdsong. It's free to access, which makes it brilliant value as part of a broader Powys break. Base yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots - By the Wye Glamping or Borders Hideaway are both highly rated and close enough for an easy morning walk - and mix Ton Wood with days exploring Hay-on-Wye or the broader Wye Valley. The forest works best as an add-on to a proper park holiday rather than as a destination in itself.
