Tomachlower

You'll be climbing for proper views across Aberdeenshire when you make the trek up Tomachlower. It's a modest peak by Highland standards - nothing that'll demand crampons or special kit - but the reward is a landscape that opens up in all directions once you're up top. The walk itself takes you through moorland and rough grazing, and depending on which route you pick from Keith, you're looking at a solid couple of hours up and the same back down.

This one's for walkers who like a real walk without the scrambling. Families with older kids will manage it fine; anything under ten might find the bog sections a bit of a slog, to be honest. History types won't find much up there except the land itself, which is reward enough. The Aberdeenshire moorland has a stark beauty - wide open sky, heather in season, views that stretch all the way to the Cairngorms on a clear day.

Start early if you can. Weather changes fast up here, so check conditions before you go. There's no café at the top, obviously, so bring water and a packed lunch if you want to sit about and take it in. The nearest town is Keith, which has the basics for supplies and somewhere to grab coffee afterwards.
