Tom nan Eildean

Tom nan Eildean sits just outside Fort William, a modest peak that doesn't demand hours of your time but rewards a decent walk with proper views across the Highlands. It's not a celebrity mountain - you won't find crowds here - but that's rather the point. The approach takes you through mixed terrain, partly forested lower sections before opening out as you gain height, and the panorama from the top stretches across Glen Nevis and beyond.

This works best for walkers with a bit of fitness rather than casual strollers. Allow two to three hours return depending on your pace. There's no visitor infrastructure, no café, no facilities - just you and the mountain. Free to access, naturally.

Families with older kids might manage it; younger ones could find the ascent tedious. History buffs won't find much to grab onto here, but anyone wanting a proper walk that actually feels like you've climbed something will get their money's worth.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park has an excellent reputation, or Linnhe Lochside Holidays if you prefer something a touch more upmarket - this makes a solid morning or afternoon sortie. It's close enough to Fort William that you're not eating a whole day on logistics. On decent weather days in autumn or spring you'll have the place nearly to yourself.
