Tom Mor

Tom Mor sits at 2,457 feet above the Spey Valley, and on a clear day you can see right across the Cairngorms. It's a proper Highlands walk this one - not a casual stroll from the car park, but genuinely worthwhile if you've got the legs for it.

The ascent from Grantown-on-Spey takes most walkers three to four hours there and back, depending on fitness. The terrain's mixed - moorland at first, then steeper rocky sections higher up. What gets people is the light. Coming up from the north, the valley opens out below you in stages, and the granite peaks around you catch the sun differently every hour.

This is for hillwalkers, not casual visitors. If you're staying at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park and fancy a proper day out, Tom Mor works brilliantly - it's close enough that you're not spending hours driving, but substantial enough that you'll feel like you've actually achieved something. Bring waterproofs. The weather changes fast up here, and what looked settled in the morning can turn properly grim by midday.

Children aged ten and up will manage it fine on a good weather day. Younger kids will find it tough going, and the final push to the summit is genuinely exposed in places. Start early to make the most of daylight, especially in winter months. Free to climb, obviously - it's a Scottish mountain.
