Tockenham Reservoir

The water's dark and still, stretching out across the Wiltshire flatlands like someone's left a massive mirror lying about. Tockenham Reservoir sits just outside Swindon, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard - you're expecting the usual suburban sprawl, then suddenly there's this proper expanse of water surrounded by reeds and wildlife.

It's a working reservoir, so don't expect fairground atmosphere. What you get instead is serious birdwatching territory. Herons, grebes, the occasional osprey if you're lucky. Walkers do well here too - there's a decent circuit around the perimeter if you're after a couple of hours on your feet without any real elevation drama. The paths are flat and straightforward, which means it suits families and older visitors just fine, though young kids might find it a bit lacking in the entertainment department unless you're genuinely into identifying birds.

Timing-wise, early morning or dusk gives you the best chance of spotting wildlife. The light's better for photography too. It's free to visit and genuinely accessible, which is refreshing. You're not far from Park Farm Campsite either - less than four miles away - so if you're basing yourself there for a park holiday, this makes an easy detour. Bring binoculars. Bring a bird guide if you're the type. Leave the expectations of dramatic Cotswold scenery at home and just enjoy the quiet.
