Titchmarsh Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself in proper wetland country here, roughly six miles from Peterborough. Titchmarsh Nature Reserve is the sort of place where you actually see birds - not just hear them crashing about in the undergrowth. The site itself is a working gravel pit that's been allowed to do its thing, which means you get open water, reed beds, and muddy margins where waders like curlews and redshanks turn up depending on the season.

There's a network of paths threading through the reserve, some better maintained than others. You can walk the perimeter or cut across the middle - takes anything from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how serious you are with binoculars. The observation towers are genuinely useful rather than just for show, giving you proper views across the water without spooking everything in sight.

This is absolutely worth a morning if you're staying at somewhere like Brightside Caravan Park. Bird watchers will have their heads in scopes within five minutes. Families with kids who can focus for more than ten minutes will enjoy spotting dragonflies and maybe a heron. Pure ornithologists might find it a bit limited compared to bigger reserves, but as a break from caravan life it's ideal - free entry, easy parking, and you're not fighting crowds.

Go early if you can. The light's better and so is the bird activity. Late afternoon works too, but morning wins.
