Tinside Rigg

The climb up to Tinside Rigg pays off properly once you reach the summit. It's a modest peak by Lakeland standards - nothing that'll take your breath away in a dramatic sense - but the views across towards the Eden Valley and beyond Kirkby Stephen are genuinely worth the walk. The approach isn't brutal either, so it's the sort of place where reasonably fit walkers can head up without it becoming an all-day mission.

What you get is open fell terrain with proper 360-degree views. On a clear day you can see a fair way across the Pennines. The summit itself is straightforward to locate and there's nothing tricky about the navigation. It takes maybe ninety minutes to two hours from the road, depending on your pace and how much time you spend admiring the countryside along the way.

This works well as part of a broader walking holiday in the area rather than a standalone destination. Families with older kids who enjoy steady walking will find it manageable. Little ones might get restless on what's essentially an open moorland trudge without dramatic features to hold their attention.

There's no visitor infrastructure up here - no café, no facilities - so bring water and something to eat. It's free to access, naturally, and you can walk it pretty much any time of year, though winter can make the approach muddy and less pleasant underfoot.
