Thurrock Museum

The museum sits bang in the middle of Tilbury, housed in a Victorian building that's seen a fair few changes over the years. Inside, you'll find local history spanning from Roman times right through to the modern day - pottery shards, Victorian photographs, bits of industrial heritage from when this stretch of Essex was properly working for its living.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow browse rather than a quick dash. The Roman section is genuinely interesting if you care about that sort of thing, and there's enough on Tilbury's dock history to make you understand why this town mattered. Kids might find the Victorian gallery a touch dry, but adults with any interest in industrial England will spend a good hour here without noticing the time slip away.

Free entry is the major draw - no excuses not to pop in. You'll need forty minutes minimum if you're reading the panels properly, but two hours is more realistic if something captures your attention. Monday to Thursday mornings are quiet, which makes a difference when you're trying to actually read the displays.

If you're camped at Thamesview just down the road, it's an obvious rainy-day option. Fair warning though - it's modest in scale, and the layout can feel a bit cramped when school groups arrive. The building itself is charming enough to justify the visit on its own merits, even if the collections don't entirely grip you.
