Thurdistoft Broch

You're standing in front of what's basically a pile of ancient stones in the middle of nowhere, and that's rather the point. Thurdistoft Broch is a Iron Age tower - what's left of it anyway - and it sits alone on the Highland moor near Thurso with absolutely nothing to soften the landscape around it. The broch itself is pretty substantial even in ruins; you can still make out the circular stone structure and get a real sense of how imposing it must have been two thousand years ago when it was actually intact.

If you're into archaeology and Scottish prehistory, you'll find this genuinely absorbing. The isolation is part of the appeal - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the stones themselves and your own imagination. That said, there's not much to do once you've had a proper look and taken your photos. Allow half an hour, maybe forty-five minutes if you're really getting into it.

It's free and accessible whenever you fancy turning up, which is the way these things should be. The nearest town is Thurso, about twenty minutes away, so you could easily work this into a broader wander around the far north. If you're staying at Little Croft Highlands nearby, it makes for a decent morning excursion - nothing strenuous, just a walk across moorland to something genuinely old. The wind can be ferocious up here, so dress properly. Not everyone will find standing around a broch particularly thrilling, if we're honest, but if you like solitude and actual history rather than curated experiences, you'll rate it.
