Throckley Pond

The pond at Throckley sits quietly on the edge of Northumberland, far enough from the main drag that it feels genuinely removed from things. It's a modest body of water - nothing vast, nothing that'll take your breath away - but there's something rather settling about standing here with the water still and the banks thick with vegetation.

This is the sort of place walkers actually appreciate rather than Instagram tourists. The water reflects whatever sky you've got on the day, and in decent light it's genuinely pleasant. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; there's proper wildlife here. Families with young children might find an hour enough - it's not a massive loop walk, and there aren't facilities or ice cream vans, so manage expectations on that front.

Derercroft is your nearest proper town if you need anything, though it's a small enough spot that you'll want to plan ahead. The real draw for a holiday base is Valley View Camping & Glamping, about six miles off, which gives you decent accommodation without being too remote.

Throckley Pond works best as part of a wider walk through the Northumberland countryside rather than as a destination unto itself. It's free to visit, obviously - there's no gate, no charge. Go early morning when the water's calmest and the place genuinely feels like your own discovery. Don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.
