Thrift Wood

Thrift Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Cheltenham - the kind of place that doesn't announce itself but rewards you for turning up. It's a mixed forest with decent pathways threading through beech and oak, the canopy thick enough that even on drizzly days it feels protective rather than gloomy.

You're looking at an hour or so for a leisurely loop, maybe less if you're just wanting to stretch your legs. The wood has that settled, manageable feel - not wild, not manicured either. The ground cover shifts through the seasons. Spring brings a flush of bluebells that's genuinely worth timing a visit around. Summer is thick and quiet. Autumn does the usual timber-coloured business. Winter strips it back to structure, which has its own appeal.

Walkers will find it straightforward enough, though the paths can get muddy after rain - bring proper boots rather than trainers. Families with younger kids can do shorter stretches without feeling like they've missed the point. It's not the kind of wood that demands three hours of commitment or a detailed map, which is actually rather nice.

If you're based at Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club just four miles away, this sits nicely into a half-day routine. Not a destination on its own, but a proper addition to a Cotswolds holiday where you're mixing villages, walks, and proper countryside time. Cheltenham itself has better facilities for lunch or supplies, but the wood itself asks nothing of you except wellies and decent weather sense.
