Three Wilderness Stones

Three large stones standing in a Hampshire field - that's the whole thing, really. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretive boards explaining what they mean or where they came from. Just three weathered rocks and the questions they leave behind.

It's the sort of place that appeals to people who like their history mysterious and their walks peaceful. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after five minutes, but if you've got teenagers or adults who enjoy a bit of archaeological intrigue, it's worth the detour from Southampton. The stones themselves are genuinely striking in their simplicity - there's something oddly compelling about standing near them and trying to work out your own theory about their age and purpose.

Get there early morning or late afternoon and you'll likely have the place to yourself. No entry fee as far as anyone can tell, and you can cover the whole thing in half an hour, though lingering is half the point. The walk through the surrounding countryside is pleasant enough, rolling Hampshire farmland rather than dramatic scenery.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Sunnydale Farm, Bell Tent Glamping, or Mercury Holiday Park are all within five miles - this makes an easy morning activity before heading elsewhere. It's not going to be the highlight of your holiday, but it's exactly the sort of low-key, free experience that breaks up a caravan park week nicely. Bring a picnic, take some photos, make up your own theories.
