Thorp Perrow sits just outside Northallerton and spreads across grounds that feel properly expansive - woodland walks threading between specimen trees you'd struggle to name, open areas where you can actually breathe. The arboretum itself is the main draw: mature plantings that give you that satisfying sense of scale, especially if you've got kids who need space to run about without feeling penned in.

Then there's the bird of prey and mammal centre. These facilities tend to divide opinion, but the hawks and falcons here are handled well, and if you time it right you might catch a flying display. It's engaging enough for a couple of hours, though not something that'll keep a restless teenager entertained all day.

The whole setup works as a proper half-day stop rather than a full outing.
