Thorndown Plantation

Three miles out of Newbury, Thorndown Plantation is a proper working forest where you can actually get lost in the sense that matters - the good sense. It's not a managed visitor attraction with interpretation boards and gift shops; this is genuine woodland where locals walk their dogs and the occasional deer wanders through without giving a toss about your camera.

The plantation stretches across decent acreage with mixed trees - mostly conifer but enough broadleaf to keep it interesting through the seasons. Winter's bleak here, spring brings proper carpet of bluebells if you time it right, and autumn? The light through the trees is worth the muddy boots alone.

Walkers get the most from this place. There's no formal paths or way-marked routes that I could find, but that's rather the point. You're navigating by instinct, following the openings in the trees, discovering small clearings. Bring an Ordnance Survey map if you're not confident. Families with young kids might find it a bit featureless after an hour - there's no playground or stream to paddle in, just trees.

It's free to roam, open sunrise to sunset or whenever you get there. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on how much you want to wander. Staying at Hollington Park Glamping or Bishops Green Farm nearby? This slot perfectly into a forest walk day. Neither park is far away, making Thorndown a good morning's outing before lunch. Wear decent boots though - it gets boggy.
