Thorndon Church, All Saints

All Saints Church sits on a quiet rise just outside Eye, Suffolk, a proper medieval parish church that's been doing the same job for about 500 years. The flint and stone construction gives it that solid, Norfolk-border look, and inside you'll find the usual mixture of Victorian restoration and genuinely old detail - carved roof bosses, an ancient font, the sort of thing that makes you squint at brass plaques for longer than you'd expect.

It's a straightforward visit rather than a destination in itself. Twenty minutes maximum if you're alone, maybe half an hour if you've got kids asking questions about the gargoyles. The appeal is quiet and specific: if you're into medieval churches or you're doing the Suffolk pilgrimage thing, this is worth a stop. For families after activities or anyone after a spectacle, you'll be disappointed.

No admission fee as far as I can tell, though you'll want to check locally as opening times aren't well publicised. Best visited during daylight hours in summer when the light comes through the windows properly. The location makes it an easy add-on if you're staying at Hill Farm Suffolk just down the road - the park's a quality spot, and a church walk breaks up the holiday routine without demanding much effort.

The village of Eye itself is pleasant enough for a wander and a tea stop. Not essential, but if you're spending a week in Suffolk's quieter corners, you could do worse.
