Thorn Hill

The walk up Thorn Hill rewards you with proper moorland views across the Wensleydale valley, and it's far less crowded than some of the bigger peaks nearby. Starting from Leyburn, you're looking at a straightforward climb - nothing technical, just steep enough to get your legs working. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but the 360-degree sightlines make it worth the effort.

You'll pass through open moorland with heather and gorse, and on a clear day the views stretch right across to Pen-y-ghent and the higher fells beyond. The walk takes roughly two hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. It's ideal if you want something more active than a gentle stroll but aren't ready to tackle the serious peaks. Families with children aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger legs might find the gradient tedious on the descent.

Timing matters here. Early morning keeps you ahead of the weekend crowds, and autumn gives you the best light. There's no entrance fee - it's moorland access - and you can park near Leyburn and head straight out. If you're staying at Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park just down the road, this is a cracking way to spend a morning before lunch. The terrain's dry enough most of the year, but those final muddy sections after rain can be slippery, so proper boots are sensible.
