The Yard Gallery

The Yard Gallery sits just outside Stroud, in the heart of Gloucestershire's rolling countryside, and it's exactly the sort of place you'd stumble upon if you took a wrong turn and decided to stay a while. Artist studios and exhibition spaces fill what was once an actual working yard - that industrial past still hangs about in the exposed brick and the way light floods through old workshop windows.

You wander between different maker spaces, watching potters, painters, and craftspeople actually working. There's no velvet rope separating you from creation - you're practically in the studio with them. Some visitors spend twenty minutes, others lose an afternoon. It depends entirely on whether you're the type who wants to chat with artists about their process or whether you're after a quick aesthetic hit.

The gallery works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're camping at Middle Lypiatt or Painswick Glamping nearby. Stroud itself is walkable, proper arty market town with decent cafes and independent shops, so you can easily string together a morning here, lunch somewhere in town, and still have the afternoon free for the wider Cotswolds.

Families with older kids who have an actual attention span will get something from it. Young children? They'll start asking "are we done yet" after about thirty minutes. It's free entry, which is genuinely brilliant, though obviously supporting artists with a purchase is the decent thing to do. Go on a weekday if possible - weekends can draw a small crowd and the whole point is that intimate studio atmosphere.
