The Wilderness (Ger-Y-Llyn Pond)

The Wilderness sits just inland from Porthcawl, a proper gem for anyone who wants to escape the seaside crowds without driving far. It's essentially Ger-Y-Llyn Pond surrounded by wetland and woodland - the kind of place where you'll actually see something living rather than just walking round looking at manicured paths.

Water dominates here. The pond itself draws dragonflies, damselflies, and all manner of waterfowl depending on the season. There's nothing flash about it - no café, no gift shop, no visitor centre - which is partly why it works. You get the impression wildlife doesn't know it's being watched, and that's the whole appeal.

The reserve is best for patient types: birdwatchers, photographers, anyone who enjoys standing still and listening. Young kids can manage it, though "can we go now?" will come faster than you'd hope if they're the hyperactive sort. Give yourself an hour minimum, ideally longer if you bring binoculars.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a breather if you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park just down the road - that's barely half a mile away. You get the seaside holiday ticked off, but then you've got genuine wildlife habitat on your doorstep without the effort of driving inland. Spring and early autumn are your best bets for activity and decent light, though honestly it's worth a look any time the weather's passable.
