The Whalebone

You'll spot it from a distance - a massive jawbone of a whale, planted upright in the Norfolk landscape like some Victorian oddity that nobody bothered to move. The Whalebone stands near Wisbech as a rather peculiar reminder of when whaling ships actually returned to these Fenland ports with their catches. It's not dramatically ancient, and there's not much ceremony around it, but that's rather the point.

What you're looking at is genuine - a real whale's jaw that arrived here in the 1800s and got left behind. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards worth mentioning. You turn up, you see it, you photograph it if you're that way inclined, and you leave. The whole thing takes perhaps ten minutes.

Historians and oddity hunters will find it properly interesting - a tangible link to Norfolk's maritime past that most people completely ignore. Children might be fascinated by the sheer size of it, though they'll lose interest quickly unless they're genuinely into natural history. Walkers doing a longer route through the Fens will appreciate it as a curiosity stop rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Westerby Farm Camping and Glamping just down the road, it's absolutely worth a detour on a drive out. Free to see, no time wasted, and you'll have a decent story. On its own? Probably not a reason to make a special journey. But combined with exploring the wider Fenland landscape around Wisbech, it slots in nicely as the sort of thing that makes a holiday memorable rather than remarkable.
