The Wetlands

The Wetlands near Durham is proper wetland - reeds, water, birds, the lot. It's the kind of place where you come for peace and leave having actually seen something. A mile or so of walking through managed wetland habitat where the main event is whatever's currently nesting or migrating through.

If you're into birdwatching, this is your stop. Herons, egrets, warblers depending on season - bring binoculars and patience. Families with young kids get restless after an hour unless they're genuinely keen on spotting things. The paths are flat and well-maintained, no scrambling required.

Go early morning for better wildlife activity and fewer people. Spring and autumn migrations are the peak times, though winter brings its own draws if you don't mind cold. You're looking at 90 minutes to two hours to do it properly without rushing.

County Durham's got decent parks scattered about, so slot this in as your one quieter morning between longer walks elsewhere. Free access, which is always welcome. Bring waterproof shoes; water's never far away and the paths can be boggy even when they don't look it.
