The Walks

A flat riverside walk that cuts through the heart of King's Lynn, The Walks is Norfolk at its most understated. This long, tree-lined path runs alongside the Great Ouse, offering a proper change of pace from the usual seaside trudge. You're walking between water and parkland, with Victorian landscaping that's held up remarkably well - no fancy visitor centre, just decent paths and plenty of green space to breathe in.

It's ideal for families who don't fancy a full hike but want to burn off some energy without faffing about for hours. The going is flat and easy, so pushchairs manage fine and older kids won't complain about their legs giving out. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - the space and the river views make it feel like you've left town even though you're basically walking through it. Bird watchers should bring binoculars; the water and trees attract decent numbers of species throughout the year.

You can wander for as long as you fancy - a quick thirty-minute loop or a couple of hours if you're not in a hurry. Spring and early summer are best, when the trees are fully leafed and the riverside feels almost wild. Winter can get a bit bleak, though that's not necessarily a bad thing if you like your Norfolk moody.
