The Tarn

The Tarn sits just outside Morpeth, a proper little lake that catches you off guard if you're not expecting it. It's the kind of water that changes character depending on the light - grey and moody one minute, then suddenly reflecting the sky like a mirror. The walk round takes about twenty minutes if you're dawdling, longer if you stop to actually look at things.

It's mainly a spot for a gentle circuit rather than anything dramatic. You'll see ducks, the occasional angler, and if you time it right, some decent birdlife. Families with younger kids find it manageable since the path is straightforward and you're never far from the car park. The real appeal is that it's close to town yet feels properly removed - no crowds, minimal facilities, just water and trees.

Worth an hour of your time, especially if you're staying at Percy Wood Holiday Park nearby and fancy breaking up the day with a walk that doesn't require serious effort or special kit. It won't blow your mind, but that's sort of the point. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you might catch something worth photographing. The town of Morpeth is close enough if you need a coffee afterwards.
