The Staithe Gallery

The Staithe Gallery sits right on the waterfront in Wells-next-the-Sea, housed in one of those lovely converted Victorian buildings that line the quay. It's a working artist's space as much as it is a gallery - you'll often find painters and makers in the studio, which gives the whole place a genuine creative energy rather than that sterile gallery feel.

What you get is contemporary art with a strong local flavour. Paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics - mostly from Norfolk-based artists who understand what it means to live on this stretch of coast. The work changes regularly, so there's always something different to see. It's not sprawling, which is partly its charm. You can get round it properly in under an hour without feeling rushed.

Walkers and art enthusiasts will find it most rewarding. The gallery works as a natural stop on a waterfront wander - grab a coffee at one of the harbourside cafés, duck into the Staithe, then carry on towards the lifeboat station or along to the beach. Families won't spend long here unless the kids are genuinely into visual art, but it's free to browse and never feels unwelcoming.

Stay at Pinewoods just down the road - barely a mile away - and you've got the best of both worlds: proper Norfolk coast access plus culture without the tourist crush of somewhere like Cromer. Wells itself is walkable, manageable, and the Staithe feels like a genuine working part of the town rather than a visitor attraction bolted on.
