Walking into the Sheffield Buddhist Centre feels properly different from the usual run of Sheffield attractions. The space itself is calm - that's the whole point - with a shrine room that's genuinely peaceful even if you've got no particular spiritual leanings. They run regular meditation sessions, some for complete beginners, which is handy if you've always wondered what the fuss was about but thought you'd look daft turning up cold. There's a library and a cafe area too, so it's not a quick ten-minute tick-box situation.

Camp nearby at Fox Hagg Farm or Wyming Brook (which gets excellent reviews) and you've got a proper cultural break from the usual Peak District hiking. It's the kind of place that rewards spending a proper hour here rather than rushing through. Sheffield's easy enough to navigate on foot, and the Centre gives the city a different angle than the cutlery history everyone bangs on about.
