The Scalp

The Scalp rises abruptly from the Aberdeenshire landscape like something trying to escape the ground itself. This isn't a gentle hill - it's a proper, steep-sided peak that demands respect and decent boots. The walk up takes maybe forty-five minutes from the base, but the gradient is unforgiving in places, especially if the ground's wet. You get rewarded at the top with views across rolling moorland and down towards Keith, which sits below like a toy village. On a clear day you can see for miles. It's the sort of place that makes you genuinely feel like you've climbed something, rather than ambled uphill for twenty minutes. Weather matters here - cloud rolls in fast, and the wind can be sharp. Go in autumn or spring when the visibility tends to be better and you won't be boiling in layers. This is walkers' territory, really. Kids with decent stamina will manage it fine, but it's not a casual family stroll. The whole outing - walk and summit time - needs about two hours. There's no café, no facilities, no soft edges. That's part of the appeal. If you're staying at Hillside Havens just down the road, it's a brilliant morning sortie before heading somewhere lower-key. Solo walkers will find it brilliant for thinking time.
