The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse sits just outside Castle Cary as a proper oddity - a circular Iron Age settlement that's somehow survived two thousand years in Somerset's rolling countryside. What you're actually looking at is an earthwork: concentric rings of defensive ditches and banks that would have enclosed roundhouses (hence the name), though the structures themselves are long gone. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk around the perimeter, trying to imagine how it all functioned. The earthworks are still impressive if you know what you're looking at, but I'll be honest - it won't grab your attention like a castle would. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting; families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards that I'm aware of, so bringing a decent guidebook helps. It's free to access and takes about thirty minutes to properly explore, depending on how much you want to poke around. Late afternoon light catches the banks nicely for photos. If you're based at Hadspen Glamping just up the road (barely a mile away), it's worth combining with a proper walk across the surrounding farmland. For those staying at Long Hazel Park or Sunnyhill Campsite, it makes a reasonable half-hour detour if you're already in the Castle Cary area. The site works best as part of a broader Somerset history day rather than a destination in itself.
