The Rocks viewpoint

The view from The Rocks stops you dead. You're looking out across the Mendip plateau with Winscombe spread below, and on a clear day the Bristol Channel glimmers in the distance. It's one of those viewpoints that justifies the walk, though the path up can be a bit muddy depending on the weather.

This is a proper nature reserve, not just a scenic overlook. The woodland around here supports some decent bird populations - bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Spring and early summer are when it's busiest with birdwatchers, though you'll have peace and quiet most other times.

Allow an hour for the walk and viewpoint combined, maybe longer if you're the type to sit with a flask and sketch the landscape. The reserve itself is free to explore, which is refreshing. Families with reasonable walkers will get on fine, though younger kids might find the climb tedious. On balance, it's worth the detour if you're staying at Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa or the Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site - both are close enough for a morning excursion before heading to bigger attractions in the Cheddar Gorge area.
