The Robertson Oak

An ancient oak tree standing in Perthshire, the Robertson Oak is one of those quietly significant landmarks that rewards a short detour if you're already in the Pitlochry area. The tree itself is genuinely old - we're talking centuries here - and there's something rather moving about standing in front of something that's been rooted to the same spot since well before your great-grandparents were born.

It's not a grand visitor attraction with cafes and interpretive panels. You turn up, you see the oak, you spend ten minutes or so taking it in and perhaps reading whatever local information is posted nearby. The real appeal is historical rather than scenic - this is a place for anyone with an interest in local heritage or simply those who appreciate the weight of age in a living thing. Kids under eight will probably lose interest quickly, but older children studying local history might find it genuinely interesting.

The location works well if you're staying at Milton Of Fonab Caravan Park, which is practically on your doorstep, or at one of the other sites nearby like Faskally Woods Holiday Park. Pitlochry itself has plenty to keep you occupied - the town's well set up for visitors - so it's an easy add-on rather than a reason to make a special journey. Allow yourself a few minutes either side for wandering, but this isn't a two-hour stop. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though checking locally before you visit wouldn't go amiss given the lack of formal facilities.
