The Redoubt

A sprawling earthwork fortress that's easy to miss if you're not looking carefully - The Redoubt sits on slightly raised ground just outside Perth, a genuine Iron Age hill fort that's genuinely worth a detour if you're into that sort of thing. What you get is a proper sense of scale: concentric defensive banks that ripple outward, the sort of engineering that makes you realise these weren't primitive structures at all. You can walk the perimeter in maybe twenty minutes, longer if you stop to work out the defensive logic.

History buffs and archaeologists will find themselves genuinely engaged here - the layered earthworks tell a story about how Iron Age people thought about protection and community. It's less showy than some Perthshire attractions, which means you'll likely have it to yourself on a quiet afternoon. Families with older kids who aren't bored by "just earth banks" will get something out of it; younger children might struggle with the invisible nature of the fort - there's nothing to clamber on, nothing to poke at.

Free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be challenging. Allow an hour if you're really studying the banks, half that if you're just passing through. It pairs well with a Perthshire holiday - Beech Hedge is barely two and a half miles away, and you could easily combine this with walks along the Tay or a proper day exploring Perth itself. The site's unmanicured, which is rather lovely - no gift shop, no interpretation boards telling you what to think.
