The Porta

The Porta stands as one of England's most intact Romano-British gateways, a proper slice of military architecture from nearly two thousand years ago. It's the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly - you'll find it just outside Ely, and honestly, it rewards the visitor who knows what they're looking at.

What you get is a substantial stone archway, the threshold through which Roman soldiers once marched. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no interactive element, no café, no gift shop. But if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Heatherbield Lodge is particularly well-rated and just a couple of miles away - it makes a worthwhile morning detour between larger attractions.

The surrounding fenland walks are genuinely good, and Ely itself offers cathedral grandeur if you want contrast. Free to visit, no time constraints. Go when the light's decent; the stonework photographs well in late afternoon.
