The Pool

Drive inland from Hunstanton and you'll stumble upon The Pool, a proper woodland spot that punches above its weight. It's a freshwater pool surrounded by mature trees - the sort of place where dappled light hits the water and you remember why you came to Norfolk in the first place. The forest floor is thick with undergrowth, and there's something genuinely peaceful about walking the perimeter without the screech of gulls.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a dramatic landscape, but it's the kind of quiet woodland ramble that clears your head. Kids can manage it without complaint, though don't expect them to be thrilled for hours - it's a 30 to 45 minute potter rather than an all-day affair. The water itself is interesting enough to gaze at, and the trees offer decent shelter if Norfolk's weather turns damp, which it does.

Based near Hunstanton, you're well-positioned for the coast, but The Pool gives you a totally different feel. If you're staying at Wild Luxury or one of the other parks dotted around here - Parkdean Resorts Manor Park is minutes away - this is worth a morning visit to break up beach days. Go early to avoid the school groups, though to be honest, it's rarely rammed. Free to access, naturally. Bring a decent pair of boots; the ground can be boggy after rain.
