Walkers loop the perimeter on a decent enough path that takes the best part of an hour if you're not in a rush. There's real appeal in that: no visitor centre, no gift shop, just you and the water. Birdwatchers rate it highly, especially in winter when the reed warblers clear out and you get better views of grebes and the occasional winter visitor.

The downside? Don't expect facilities. There's nowhere to grab a coffee or a snack, and the car park is basic. Kids will get bored after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely interested in birds or fishing. It's not a destination in itself.

What makes it worth knowing about is how it slots into a Fenland holiday. Staying at Fields End Water or Knightsbridge Caravan Park puts you within walking distance for a morning or evening walk. Pair it with the bigger attractions inland - March itself has decent shops and pubs - and it becomes a nice relief valve. Go early in the day when the light's right across the water and the place feels even more remote.
