The Pier Gallery

Ilfracombe's pier has long been a focal point of the seafront, and the Pier Gallery sits right where you'd expect it to - overlooking the water with proper sea views. It's a compact space dedicated to contemporary art and local work, the sort of place that rewards a casual wander on a grey afternoon rather than a destination you plan your day around.

The gallery itself is intimate. You're not looking at vast installations or anything that demands hours of your time - more like the kind of rotating exhibitions that catch Ilfracombe's visiting artists and craftspeople. If you're staying at Hele Valley Holiday Park just down the coast, or one of the larger parks like Golden Coast, it's a natural stop when the beach gets too windy or the tide's not playing ball.

Families with older kids will find it fine for twenty minutes or so. Younger ones might lose interest fast unless there's something particularly engaging on. What works in its favour is the location itself - you're on the pier, you've got the water, the beach, and the town's eclectic vibe all around you.

Best to check opening hours before you go, as galleries this size can be seasonal or keep temperamental hours. It's free admission as far as I'm aware, though a small donation wouldn't go amiss. The real charm isn't the art necessarily - it's having another reason to get out onto the pier itself and see what Ilfracombe's actually about beyond the donkeys and the rock shops.
