The Now

The Now is Cambridge's contemporary art gallery, and it's genuinely worth a look if you're passing through the city. The space focuses on living artists and current practice - no dusty old masters, just work made by people still making waves in the art world right now. You'll find painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, the lot. It's the sort of place where you can spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on what's on and how deep you want to go.

The gallery itself is fairly compact, which is both its strength and its limitation. You won't need a full day here, but that's fine - it works perfectly as a stop-off between Cambridge's colleges and the Backs. Pop in, have a proper look at what's hanging, and you're done in an hour, hour and a half tops.

Families with older kids will find it more rewarding than younger ones. If your children are still at the stage where galleries mean boredom, leave them at the punt. Serious art types will appreciate the curatorial choices, though you might find yourself wishing for more depth in some exhibitions.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Highfield Farm Touring Park and Cambridge Cherry Hinton are both within 3-5 miles - it's an easy trip into the city centre. Parking can be tricky though, so factor that in. Check their website for current exhibitions before you go; what's on changes regularly, and you want to know if it's worth the effort.
